14 Things You Need To Know About Sushi

  1. Sushi is one of the most famous traditional foods of Japan. The prime ingredient of the sushi is not fish but vinegar rice.
  2. Raw fish, slice meat, sea food, fruits or almost anything can be used as topping and filling for sushi.
  3. Eating sushi is not like eating burger or fries, there are several etiquettes to follow and certain things which are not desirable while eating it.
  4. The famous black wrapping (Nori) around the sushi roll is in fact an algae.
  5. Sushi if contained raw fish and seafood is a source of iodine and hence could prevent diseases like goiter and mental retardation
  6. Normally it is suggested to start with light taste ones to heavier/fatty, and repeat this cycle, occasionally refreshing your mouth with 'gari' (ginger) and 'agari.' Although this is not hard and fast rule.
  7. If you don’t know how to use chopstick it is perfectly acceptable to eat it with hands.
  8. Dipping sushi into soy sauce is thought as question on chef skills of making a balanced sushi. If you have to dip sushi in soy sauce put the fish (meat) side of sushi not the rice side.
  9. Try to finish sushi in one bite however having two bites is also fine.
  10. Eat ginger between sushi not with sushi.
  11. Don’t disassemble the sushi into rice and topping
  12. Don’t rub the chopsticks together before eating sushi, because it is considered that you think the chopsticks are made of inferior quality.
  13. Don’t leave the half eaten sushi in the plate.
  14. Never smoke in sushi bar, you don’t want to ruin the subtle taste and aroma of sushi for yourself and others.
